Use of geo-textiles in Civil Engg applications over synthetic products

Civil engineering applications have a wide spread demand with growing and emerging economies building capacity and infrastructure rapidly.

In a lot of applications such as:
  • Road construction
  • Dam construction
  • River / Canal - embankments
  • Landscaping
Geo-textiles are often needed to hold the soil in a particular angle (esp. if greater than 45 degrees) so that the soil holds onto the desired shape and does not erode over time. Natural geo-textiles offer a number of benefits:
  • being natural fabric, it helps to rejuvenate the soil
  • it is bio-degradable and with time becomes one with the soil
  • based on typical soil characteristics (cohesion etc.) the appropriate strength of the geo-textile can be selected
However it is often observed that due to cost pressures, synthetic products such as nylon nets are often used as substitutes. While it may provide similar functional properties in the short-term, in the long term it harms the soil and mother earth in unimaginable ways as a best practice, synthetic products should not be allowed to mix with soil.

Sears building re-engineered to highest sustainability standards

Two years and $5 million later, Rice Fergus Miller Architecture & Planning is in its new home, which features the highest achievable standards of sustainability, but which also bows reverently to the past.

Old-timers remember the 32,000-square-foot space as a former Sears automotive and appliance center at 275 Fifth Street. The huge, square shell stood abandoned and crumbling since the 1980s, when Bremerton's retail core shifted to Silverdale. The building and garage underneath were built in the 1940s.

But Steve Rice, Dave Fergus and Mike Miller saw only opportunity in the crumbling plaster and rotting wood — it would give them an opportunity to build an urban-infill showcase they could inspire clients with and enjoy themselves. The interior space was tall with a lot of windows and light. In the ceiling high above was an interesting clerestory, a windowed pop-up section.

The partners summoned the best minds in architecture to figure out how to proceed. What they came up with is a building they say is about to receive the coveted platinum LEED designation from the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

They created a smart building that uses four times less energy than the average office structure. Enveloped in a very thick coat of insulation, the building is engineered "backward," with a thermostat on the outside. If the outside temperature is between 60 degrees and 75 degrees, no heating or cooling is needed inside.

When the temperature is outside that range, a row of ventilation nozzles high on the wall spout little breaths of heating or cooling. A 14-foot fan wafts the air around. That's all that's needed. There is no ductwork.

Water collected from the roof runs the toilets and waters the plants. Sedum's on the roof. So are solar panels that augment electricity.

The main floor is designed like a theater, with a heavy red curtain that can be pulled to create an intimate space for client "shows." Hospital clients, for example, might see a mock-up of a surgery center. Walls that move up and down and sideways offer myriad possible room arrangements in the central space, which will also offer a place for community events. The ambiance and the character of the room can be modified to suit the occassion.

Of all that is new, much is old. If the wood wasn't rotted it was reused. A counterweight from an old freight elevator will hide a time capsule at the entrance. Massive 19-foot murals have photos of the graffiti that once covered the building, and of the building in once seemingly unfixable condition.

The end goal in designing this sustainable feat of architecture and construction was to "be as light on the earth as possible".

Greece attempting to achieve financial sustainability

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said that reducing the country’s long-term debt is the key issue to be resolved to help bring stability.

“Long-term sustainability of debt is the issue on the table now because if this isn’t resolved everything else is insignificant,” Venizelos said in an interview. “Markets must be convinced that we have plugged the gaps” and the debt-reduction plan will lead to a sustainable debt load. “Public debt dynamics are the core of the problem,’ he said.

How To Make A Difference in The World

You are a naturally giving person. I assume this based on the fact that you clicked to read this article. You want to make a difference in the world. You want to have an impact on the lives of others. You want to create change. All of which are incredibly inspiring, but you must keep in mind…

The world is an incredibly big place and has countless issues to be solved.

When discussing how to solve issues facing the world, I think my professor said it best. If you try to help everyone, you help no one. The key to making a difference in the world is not to try to solve the world’s problems…concentrate on solving one problem.

Focused action makes a huge impact.

Throughout this post I will explore how you can make a difference in the world. After reading this post I want you to be able to identify where you want to make an impact and how you can begin making a difference in the world.

Where Will You Make an Impact?

The first step to making a difference in the world is to decide where you will make an impact. With so many issues facing the world how do you even begin to choose which one to target? It’s actually quite simple.

Begin by exploring what issues burn you up the most. Here are a few questions to help you explore:

• Which issues do you see on TV or read about that spark an emotional response?

• Which issues do you talk about most with your friends, co-workers, family, or strangers?

• Which causes do you feel compelled to support?

Spend some time with each of these questions and research the issues that you care about. Once you have accomplished this determine which issue you feel most passionately about. Decide that you are going to do what ever it takes to do your part to solve the issue. Commit to it.

After choosing a broad passion area you will need to narrow it down even further to have a real impact. Here is a personal example. I care about providing basic needs for people in developing countries. But that is still too vague. After exploring issues surrounding clean water I found a passion for helping people in developing gain access to clean water. Specifically, I want to help children in South America and Africa who are suffering from lack of access to clean water. The lack of clean water is keeping them from education and killing many due to the number of water related diseases.

“Every 20 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease.” – Water.org

Where will you make an impact? Take some time and find an issue that you truly care about. Don’t pick something just because it is popular or on the news.

Who Is Actively Working With Your Issue?

Next, find people and organizations that are working with your issue. It is infinitely more difficult to attack a major world issue on your own. There is a great chance that numerous organizations are already working to solve an issue you care about. Don’t try to recreate the wheel. Work with experts who have established relationships. Find ways you can engage through volunteer work, financial contributions or employment. Here are a couple of places to turn to:

• Blogs/Websites

• Universities/Colleges

• Local Organizations

• National Organizations

• Social Entrepreneurs

• Corporations/Businesses

After finding people who are working on your issue, contact them. Most people are very gracious and open to establishing relationships. You both care about the same issue, there is no reason why you can’t work together and do more good.

There are multiple organizations that are focused on providing clean water to people in developing countries. Some of the most popular are Water.org, Charity Water and Water for People. I have decided to work with H20 For Life Schools because they work directly with helping children in the countries where I want to have an impact.

How Do You Make A Difference?

So you have discovered an issue that you care about and found someone working to solve the issue. Now it is time to determine how you intend to have an impact. There are so many ways that you can make a difference that it can be overwhelming. The most important thing to remember is start by doing something small.

You will not be able to solve a global issue overnight. It’s just not going to happen that fast. You can solve a global issue with consistent focused action. The key is to start somewhere and complete one project. Then build momentum from small victories. Overtime you will establish partnerships with others and scale up to make a larger impact. For now, focus on completing a small project. Even if you just help one person, you are making a difference in the world. Here are a few ways you can make a difference:

• Make giving to a cause a part of your company’s mission.

• Start a social entrepreneurship venture. A friend and I started a for-profit business called LifeSoap Company that gives 90% of our after-tax profits to clean water projects that help children. We are supporting our first project in South America this year.

• Volunteer to help a cause that makes a difference in an issue you care about.

• Contribute financially to a cause by supporting an organization.

• Start a non-profit foundation that uses donations to solve the issue you care about.

• Host an event that takes advantage of your talents, charge an entry fee, and donate the proceeds to a cause.

Conclusion
There are many issues in the world that could capture your attention. The most important thing is to pick an issue that captures your heart. From there decide how you will use your gifts, talents and skills to make an impact. Find other like-minded individuals and get started!

GSA's Sustainability Goal: Zero Environmental Footprint (ZEF)

U.S. General Services (GSA) Administrator, Martha Johnson, launched her Zero Environmental Footprint initiative recently after assuming office a year back and she has now become the top spokesperson in the Obama administration on sustainability. The GSA has the responsibility of all Federal buildings in the US. She recently brought onboard Eleni Reed to be the Federal government's first Chief Greening Officer. But her initiatives have not been limited to making new appointments.

In a speech at the GSA IRMCO Conference in March, she pointed out a number of different accomplishments that were part of the ZEF push. Among them:

1. The acquisition of fuel-efficient and hybrid vehicles for use by federal agencies
2. Recognizing sustainability goals in awards for building design
3. Embracing virtual work, that avoids having to heat or cool entire floors of workspace
4. Requiring that new projects be “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)” certified. (LEED certification, awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council, requires that the design meet certain standards for minimizing environmental impact.)
5. Helping small businesses tackle the challenge of greenhouse gas emissions tracking and accounting.
6. Launching a Smart Buildings program

In short, Martha Johnson spoke about GSA's commitment to "green construction, green jobs, green products, green fleet, green services, and green contracting."

India: IFC to invest USD 4 mn for Green Energy

International Finance Corporation will invest USD 4 million in Moser Baer Clean Energy Limited subsidiary Sapphire Industrial Infrastructures Private Limited. The proposed investment is aimed at implementing the country’s first large-scale grid-connected thin-film solar plant located in Tamil Nadu.It may be noted this plant is also South Asia’s largest plant. The new plant will help bolster clean energy locally and provide additional electricity to about 11,000 people.

The plant, with a capacity of 8 million units of power a year, is expected to stop the production of approximately 6,600 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

Green energy financier raises $200 million to build solar farms

Veteran renewable energy financier Matt Cheney has raised $200 million that his new venture, CleanPath, aims to use to jumpstart 1,000 megawatts’ worth of solar power plants over the next five years.

The $200 million in cash and credit comes from a single public company that Cheney declined to identify until it files a regulatory disclosure about the investment.
“Money will cycle in and out of projects,” said Cheney, who previously ran MMA Renewable Ventures in San Francisco. “The money we use to get things done over next four or five years will add up to $800 million.”

That’s because once a photovoltaic farm comes online, CleanPath will sell its stake and recycle the earnings into new projects. By providing capital to developers and working with them to get solar power plants to the construction phase, CleanPath hopes to attract $3 billion to $4 billion in financing to complete the projects.

Federal tax incentives for Solar Power will slowly come down over the years as more and more companies move towards such energy sources and CleanPath will act as a middleman to arrange financing for such projects.

Energy monitoring systems are already a popular fixture in commercial buildings, but they've yet to take hold in the multi-family housing market.

Energy monitoring systems are already a popular fixture in commercial buildings, but they've yet to take hold in the multi-family housing market. The reason for this is unclear. However, it's obvious that this is a missed opportunity.

Energy monitoring systems are an often ignored method for renters to measure and reduce their energy cost and ecological footprint. Renters can instantly tell how much energy they are using by plugging in a simple energy monitoring system. Just having this knowledge is shown to reduce energy use by at least 12%.

Given this backdrop, it's surprising that more apartments owners don't promote energy monitoring systems such as Google PowerMeter. It can be a great way to help renters reduce consumption, and for apartment owners to attract the coming wave of tech- and green-savvy renters.

Promoting these tools in apartments is easier than you think. If marketed as an extra amenity, it could serve to attract more occupants. Apartments can use this as a selling point to differentiate them from other, less environmentally conscious, complexes. In the coming age of environmental responsibility and smart energy usage, property owners would be wise to make use of these devices.

For more information on how apartment owners, and renters, can take advantage of energy monitoring visit the Software Advice, a website that reviews property manager software. You can view find the full article at: Cut Apartment Energy Costs with Energy Monitoring Systems.

Luxury New Homes in Arizona Showcase Newest Green Build Best Practices

The "new normal" in residential green building has taken a leap forward, in terms of establishing cutting edge best practices worth emulating. A new home community in the Paradise Valley, Arizona area recently opened a neighborhood of 32 homes that exemplify multiple fresh ideas. The Village at Paradise Reserve, built by Cullum Homes, showcases innovations such as insulation sprayed on the roof ceiling instead of the attic floor, use of 20 SEER HVAC units with independent zones in each major room of the house with their own thermostats, and crisp and clean illumination provided by ultra energy-efficient LED lighting.

Sales have been boosted by the green features of the homes, with Phase One of the community selling out in just eight weeks after the grand opening of the furnished models - quite a feat in the stagnant Phoenix real estate market. For more information about the environmentally conscious aspects of the build, you can read about the project on Yahoo, Green Building Pro and http://cullumhomes.com/mediakit.asp.

FDA has found that a Kellogg factory in Georgia, which manufactures Amos and Keebler cookies, was contaminated with listeria which can cause sickness

Processed junk food has its drawback when it comes to the effect on the health. It also has negative impact on earth and environment because it takes a lot of energy to manufacture them and transport them over a long distance. Also sometime, the processing of the food may be done in unhygienic conditions, which may make people sick. Recently FDA has found that a Kellogg factory in Georgia, which manufactures Amos and Keebler cookies, was contaminated with listeria. The FDA had stern words for Kellogg:[It was] determined that the foods manufactured at your facility are adulterated ... in that they have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated with filth, or whereby they may have been rendered injurious to health.
