Suzlon planning $1.3 bn wind project to power Australian homes
Suzlon Energy is planning to set up a $1.3bn wind power project near the Yorke Peninsula in Australia which would be able to power 225,000 homes a year. A total of 180 turbines will generate close to 600MW and deliver it to homes via undersea cable.
The project is expected to create 500 construction jobs and 50 ongoing jobs will be completed by the end of 2015, it said. Suzlon is also involved with wind farm projects at Hallett, North of Adelaide.

Former Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi's advisor hails Gujarat green power
P S Deodhar, former electronic technology advisor to Late Rajiv Gandhi, heaped praise on the state and said that it was doing a good deal to promote renewable energy development.
Gujarat government was utilizing waste land effectively for installing solar power generation capacity. The future for solar power generation is very bright, thanks to the increased level of awareness in the country, particularly states like Gujarat, said the former chairman of Electronics Commission of Government of India.
However, Deodhar, who is also president of India China Economic and Cultural Council, was concerned about power loss due to dust on solar panels. He said that installing solar panels in desert areas could be made effective only by keeping these dust-free. Else, around 15 to 20 percent power would be lost.
How Sustainability Has Expanded the CFO’s Role - E&Y Report
Ernst & Young says the CFO should stay on top of three critical areas: investor relations, external reporting and assurance, and operational controllership and financial risk management.
Investor relations
Investors are considering the sustainability rankings of the companies in which they invest. Shareholder voting patterns provide convincing evidence of investors’ belief that a company’s social and environmental policies correlate strongly with its financial performance. Credit-rating agencies, such as Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s, now want to know about companies’ sustainability practices. So do the more specialized providers of sustainability ratings, such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI).
External reporting and assurance
Customers increasingly want to know that a company’s distribution model has a low carbon footprint; that its procurement policies take “fair trade” issues into account; and that its supply chain uses alternative energy sources.
Third-party assurance mitigates the risk of misstatements associated with sustainability reporting and sends a message that reports are relevant, reliable and free from bias. This is where the CFO’s perspective becomes important. Most CFOs have vast experience in the world of third-party assurance providers.
Operational control and financial risk management
In February 2010, the SEC issued guidance to companies regarding their responsibility to disclose material risks related to climate change. The guidance notes that a company’s CEO and CFO must certify that the company has installed “controls and procedures” enabling it to discharge its climate change disclosure responsibilities. In other words, sustainability has found its way into the realm of controllership and financial risk management.
Five actions
Ernst & Young suggests specific CFO “actions to consider” in each of the above critical areas, and concludes by recommending five overall action items, briefly:
- Actively pursue a sustainability and reporting program.
- Ensure that those responsible for sustainability matters do not operate in isolation from the rest of the enterprise — especially the finance function.
- Enhance dialogue with shareholders and improve disclosure in key areas, particularly those related to social and environmental issues.
- Ensure that directors’ skills are relevant to the chief areas of stakeholder concern, including risk management tied to social and environmental matters.
- Consider using nontraditional performance metrics, including those related to environmental/sustainability issues. In addition to financial metrics, performance goals should align with overall environmental strategy, including clearly defined metrics relating to energy efficiency, water usage and the reduction of carbon emissions. Doing so could help align compensation with risk.

10 Types of Companies that Consume the Most Electricity
- Chemicals – Fertilizers and pesticides are among the main processed-chemicals that require huge amounts of power to produce and transport.
- Petroleum – The U.S. refines nearly a quarter of all the world’s crude oil at nearly 150 refineries across the country, and these refineries consume incredible amounts of power.
- Paper Industry – The United States would be lost without paper products, and is the world’s leading producer of paper, another industry that is energy-intensive.
- All that Glitters – All that glitters may not be gold, but America is one of the global leaders in the production of cast-metal, the industry that brings us such life-staples as cookware and faux Christmas trees.
- Planes, Trains and Automobiles. . . – . . .and trucks and buses and ships, et.al. The transportation industry uses more than 25% of all the energy produced in the country, and waning supplies of fossil fuels have necessitated an accelerated changeover to alternative fuel sources, including electricity.
- Heating, Ventilation and Cooling – The heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) industry used to involve nothing more than fireplaces, blocks of ice and strategically placed doors, windows and porches, but today’s industry requires large amounts of power on a national scale.
- Appliances – We like our clothes kept clean, and we like our food kept cold until we cook it in our self-cleaning ovens, and the appliances we use to attain these goals use up a lot of power to make and to use.
- Electronics – Televisions, computers, track-lights, alarm systems and hundreds of other devices fill our domestic world, and every blinking little red light means power is being used.
- Commercial Buildings – A store or warehouse uses a lot of electricity whether it is open or not, and most other commercial buildings require significant amounts of power to heat, cool and secure.
- Construction Industry – Even during construction slowdowns the industry consumes power at a great rate, and industry up-ticks use even more power as more projects are generated.
