Wild gorillas showed their interest with U.S. tourist John J. King II. A video which is on the internet shows how the baby gorillas came too close to the tourist. The mountain gorillas are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Also standing very close is a giant male silverback gorilla. This encounter happened in a tented camp in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

An earthlike planet was found about 36 light years away. It the planet has enough clouds then it could have an atmosphere like earth. The plant is rocky and has been named HD85512b. It is revolving around an orange dwarf star in the constellation Vela. The European Southern Observatory's High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, or HARPS, instrument in Chile was used to find this planet. 

The City of Ithaca, New York has signed a contract with Integrys Energy Services of New York Inc. for purchasing Green-e Energy-certified renewable energy certificates ( RECs).

The City plans to use only renewable energy and hence it will purchase 100% of its energy requirements from Green-e Energy-certified renewable energy certificates ( RECs).

Testa Produce has a distribution center in Chicago which has been certified as LEED platinum. This is the first refrigerated food distribution facility to get this certification. The distribution center has an area of 91,300-square-foot. The distribution center has 750 kW wind turbine, solar panels, part of the roof is covered with vegetation, water recycling system. All these features generates energy savings of 60%.

Terry McGowan who is the director of engineering for the American Lighting Association says that things won’t change much and manufacturers would continue to bring more efficient lighting technology to the shelf


In the early part of December 2011 the Congress blocked a law which would have meant the incandescent bulbs which are more than 100 watts of power need to be more efficient. They would have been taken off the shelf. The regulation for 75, 60 and 40-watt bulbs will go into effect January 2013 and January 2014. Even thought law was blocked Terry McGowan who is the  director of engineering for the American Lighting Association says that things won’t change much and manufacturers would continue to bring more efficient lighting technology to the shelf.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory has said that commercial lawnmowers which are regularly used can consume more fuel as compared to a car. The lawnmowers can consume about 2000 gallons of fuel in a year, where as a car can consume only about 25 mpg. The institute says that switching over to alternative fuel can save a lot of money. Use of Ozone Depleting Substances Surges 43%


Qatar’s total consumption of ozone depleting substances surged 43% to 2,027 metric tonnes (MT) in 2010 mainly due to a three-fold rise in hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC), official figures show.
However, the use of ozone depleting substances in the country showed a highly uneven growth pattern with their consumption peaking in 2009, according to Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) data for 2005-10.
The consumption of HCFC jumped more than three-fold year-on-year to 580.80MT in 2010, while it had risen 29% to 192.30MT in 2009 but more than quadrupled to 148.50MT in 2008, the environmental statistics, released by the QSA, stated.
The country’s total consumption of ozone depleting substances had grown 87% to 1,417MT in 2009, 59% to 757.55MT in 2008, 33.33% to 476.25MT in 2007 and 15% to 357.28MT in 2006.
The use of ‘HCFC-22’ had risen 18% to 1,446MT in 2010, while it more than doubled to 1,225MT in the previous year. In 2008, its consumption was up 41% to 604MT, in 2007 it was 427.78MT (31%) and in 2006 it was 325.85MT (20%).
The use of CFC-11 and CFC-12 (chlorofluorocarbon) was zero in both 2009 and 2010 as their importation was stopped in 2010, in accordance with Montreal Protocol. The Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances believed to be responsible for ozone depletion. The consumption of CFC-11 and CFC-12 amounted to 1.78MT and 3.27MT respectively in 2008, 3.03MT and 10MT (2007); 4.35MT and 27.08MT (2006) and 6.09MT and 30.91MT (in 2005). The use of both CFC-11 and CFC-12 had progressively been reduced from 2005 to 2008.
In the case of air quality in Doha city, the QSA figures revealed that Qatar University had the highest particulate matter of 269.2 microgram per cubic meter, Movenpick at 155.7 and Aspire Zone at 73.1 against the annual limit of 50 in 2010. However, in the case of other parameters such as the presence of suplhur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ground level ozone, the three areas – Qatar University, Movenpick and Aspire Zone – had lower levels than their annual limits.
Against the annual limit of 80 microgram of sulphur dioxide per cubic meter; Qatar University had only 8.9; Movenpick (10.6) and Aspire Zone (34.7).
In the case of nitrogen dioxide, whose annual limit is 100 microgram per cubic meter, Qatar University had 39.1 and Movenpick and Aspire Zone (70.4).
About the ground level ozone, whose annual limit is 120 micrograms per cubic meter, Qatar University had 47.5, Movenpick (46.9) and Aspire Zone (32.2).
Qatar’s imports of chemical pesticides shrank 16% year-on-year to 73,746kg, said the QSA data. The import of pesticides (insecticides/anackby) plunged 80% to 300kg, pesticides (for public health) by 65% to 15,240kg and pesticides (insecticides/nimatody) by 53% to 8,000kg.

They are biomass-based diesel, advanced biofuels, cellulosic biofuels and total renewable fuels. The target is to reach 36 billion gallons by the year 2022. In the year 2012, 1.0 billion gallons or 0.91 percent of biomass based diesel will be used. About 2.0 billion gallons or 1.21 percent of  advanced biofuel  will be consumed , 8.65 million gallons or 0.006 percent of cellulosic biofuel  and total renewable fuels of about 15.2 billion gallons or 9.23 % will be consumed.

Fishing Vessels in Talks with Environment (Fiji)


The Department of Environment met with stakeholders of the fishing vessel industry yesterday for consultations on the phasing-out of ozone depleting substances.
The fishing sector uses harmful gases such as hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) in its operations of vessels. Fiji is in the process of implementing actions to phase-out these gases by retrofitting (changing/alternatives) to its vessels systems.
The Department of Fisheries officer Meli Raicebe said there were 241 foreign flagged vessels in Fiji.
"There are 106 registered long liners fishing fleets authorized to fish in Fiji's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), out of which 11 use brine solution. (Brine is used to preserve vegetables, fruit, and meat, a common fluid used in large refrigeration installations for the transport of heat from place to place).
Fisheries does not have grounds to impose restrictions on vessels based on the type of refrigeration used on board," Mr Raicebe said.
Western Marine Limited director, Mr Mingmua Liu said more time should be given to the fishing industry to change the system in vessels with incentives.
"We are supporting the move by the Department of Environment to protect our ozone layer, however, industries should understand the change and given incentives," Mr Liu said.
"Foreign vessels fall under another country's jurisdiction which needs to be reviewed and Fiji has more chance of controlling local vessels," Mr Raicebe said.

In China’s first technology roadmap for the home appliance industry, replacing HCFCs with new refrigerants will be the main task of China’s air conditioning industry in the future. As profits margins have become tighter, China’s leading air conditioner companies have shifted their attention to R290 (propane) to reduce costs and increase competitiveness.
China’s air conditioning industry has passed its peak development period to enter into a period of constant growth. In recent years, facing the pressure of rising raw materials cost and labour, excessive production capacity and intensified inflation, reducing costs while increasing core competitiveness becomes the main task of most companies.
Reducing profits space calls for lowering costs and new technologies
According to the financial reports of five major household air conditional companies, the average gross profit of 2010 was 19.6%, 4% lower than that of the previous year. Price wars in China’s air conditioning market continue to put pressure on companies' profit margins. Therefore, the country’s big companies are gradually shifting their attention to adopting new technologies to gain profits again. As the amount of R290 needed in refrigeration system is 30-40% less than R22 many companies bet on propane as the future of the industry.

Concretely, this year, China’s two leading air conditioner manufacturers Gree and Midea have released their research and application results of alternative refrigerant products. Gree announced the completion of the world’s first hydrocarbon refrigerant R290 split-type air conditioner demonstration production line. Key products of Midea using R290 have passed quality testing and manufacturing standards, and are ready to be commercialised. Both Gree and Midea have exhibited their new R290 products at major international HVAC shows.
Roadmap aims to replacing HCFCs with HCs
Besides big air conditioner companies, hydrocarbon technologies are also encouraged by industrial associations. In December 2011, the China Household Electrical Appliances Association (CHEAA) issued China’s first technology roadmap for the home appliance industry with puts a focus on replacing HCFCs with new refrigerants. By 2015, the roadmap plans to reduce the consumption of HCFC-22 by 10% compared with the average amount of 2009 and 2010.
More importantly, it aims to realise the industrialisation of hydrocarbon technology and complete the replacement of HCFC-141b among companies producing refrigerators, freezers and electric water heaters. It calls upon the industry to widely adopt low GWP refrigerants and blowing agents such as CO2 and R290. By 2020, the use of R744 (CO2) as natural refrigerant in production of freezer will meet requirements of “Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment” (RoHS). Overall, by 2015, the roadmap aims to increase refrigerator energy efficiency by 20%, and by 2020 by another 15% based on 2015.

More Research Needed on Ozone


An unexpected massive hole in the ozone layer over the Arctic discovered early this year shows that research on the issue needs to continue, a senior Environment Canada research scientist commented during a public lecture at Trent University on Wednesday.
The federal Environment Minister fielded a question about ozone in the House of Commons last week after reports that the government plans to make cuts to the ozone monitoring program.
David Tarasick, a senior research scientist with Environment Canada who was an author of the international study that revealed the ozone hole over the Arctic, didn't comment on the reports of plans to cut the ozone monitoring program. He was giving a public lecture at Trent on ozone explaining how the research is done, why ozone is important and the findings from the study. There have been other years that the ozone has been depleted over the Arctic, said Tarasick, a Trent University alumnus.
"But this year for the first time we had what everyone could agree could be defined as an ozone hole," he told the 21 people who attended the lecture. "This is so far a unique event. It's larger than we've seen before."
The dissipation of the ozone hole contributed to a 3% to 4% increase in the UV rays over the summer, Tarasick said.
"We don't really need to worry about it that much... It's a health hazard but it's a modest increase," he said. Tarasick said there were 565 deaths associated with crime in 2008, compared to 901 skin cancer deaths that same year. "Air quality is a bigger issue than international terrorism or anything like that," he said. Ozone at higher altitudes absorbs ultraviolet radiation. At lower altitudes it's a health hazard that contributes to smog.
Based on the current understanding of ozone, the ozone hole issue will go away by the middle of the century, Tarasick said. "Based on our current understanding, we think we have already solved the problem," he said. That comment drew a question from the audience pointing out that scientists didn't expect the ozone hole that appeared over the Arctic.
Tarasick conceded the point, adding the unexpected ozone hole shows that more research needs to be done to improve understanding of ozone.
"I don't think it's really alarming for people. Not yet anyway," he said of the ozone hole.
Tarasick earned an honours degree in physics and mathematics at Trent University before going to the University of Montreal for a master's degree in physics and York University, where he received a PhD in physics.

The biggest coal fired power plant will be built in China. This will be built by Shenhua Group Corporation. This plant will be built in the port city of Beihai in the southern province of Guangxi. Agreement has been signed with the local government to build the 8 – gigawatt plant.  This will help to reduce the electricity shortages in the region

PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS WITH NORMAL CHEST XRAY


A 25 year old male presented with high grade intermittent fever with dry cough since 10 days.There was no significant joint pains and bladder and bowel habits was normal. He was treated with ofloxacin and cefixime for 5 days with no relief in fever.His lab reports were TLC8400, n70,l29, e1%, ESR45, MP, optimal, dengue igm-ve.widal test was -ve and urine RE was within normal limits.LFT was a bit deranged- total bilirubin was 4.2,sgpt152u\l,sgot104u\l..His chest xrays were apparently normal.His usg abdomen showed mild hepatomegaly.Considering cough as a prominent symptom,we did a CT scan of chest.The scan showed bilateral patchy pulmonary infiltrates.His sputum,which was mostly serous did not reveal any AFB.He was treated with inh,ethambutol and streptomycin(altered ATD regime due to deranged LFT).His fever subsided in 2 days and did not return again.

Chesapeake Energy Corp. to install safety devices on the wells as ordered by Pennsylvania regulators


Natural gas from the well of Chesapeake Energy Corp. had contaminated drinking water last year. Now the Pennsylvania regulators have asked the company to install safety devices. The devices cost $600. They have to be installed in all the 114 wells. EPA is now studying the effect of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking on environment.

Casale Monferrato, Italy, December 2012. The day Durban meeting on Climate Change ended, a Chinese delegation from the Ministry of the Environment (MEP), Universities and the Chinese Industry Association planned the action to address climate change and ozone layer protection., in the  Refrigeration and Air conditioning capital of Italy, Casale Monferrato.

The Chinese mission, held at the Headquarters of Centro Studi Galileo was part of a project organised by GIZ, Proklima aimed at promoting new energy saving technology and environmental protection in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps, as part of HCFCs (Hydrochlorofluorocarbons). The meeting forged the  links with leading experts in the field of refrigeration, connected with Centro Studi Galileo (CSG), TERRE Policy Centre, the Italian Association of Refrigeration (ATF), the European Energy Centre (EEC) and the vice-presidency of the European Association of Refrigeration (AREA).

European collaboration with China in the field of energy efficiency and particularly in refrigeration is creating new synergies.  Zhong Zhifeng of MEP stated, “ Building strong bridge with Europe is important for us to ensure low GWP and Energy efficient technology. Hydrocarbons are one of the important alternatives that China is implementing for the phase out of HCFCs. This meeting is important beginning for the training and capacity building in this direction”. Joining MEP were the experts from Shanghai Jiao-Tong University and China Household Electrical Appliances Association (CHEAA).

Rajendra Shende, former Head of the United Nations Environment Programme and Chairman of Terre Policy Centre of India, who guided the meeting, stated that “ Efforts of GIZ and CSG in the field of improving the energy efficiency of refrigeration and Air conditioning appliances and the use of natural refrigerants are the most timely and relevant for China who is embarking on thee implementation of HCFC phase out.”. Mr Shende has been working for more than 20 years on the environmental issues deriving from refrigeration gasses dangerous for the Earth’s ozone layer.

AREA’ Vice President Marco Buoni presented the European experience on the elimination of HCFC gasses, and the development of natural and alternative refrigerants, also presenting the results obtained in energy saving, in addition to highlighting the importance of qualification and certification of technicians.

The programme included the visit to the manufacturing plants including one that would provide the vending machines for Coca Cola, which would be deployed in the London Olympics in 2012. The machines would use the carbon dioxide as refrigerants, with better energy efficiency.

The key outcomes of the meeting were:

  • Certification of Refrigeration Technicians as is done in Europe and implemented in countries like Italy has been found to be useful in reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency. China would strengthen its training programmes based on such experience.
  • Harmonisation of policies on use and safe handling of low GWP gasses in refrigeration will lead to much needed global efforts for capacity building, to deploy natural gasses that are flammable (hydrocarbons), toxic (ammonia) or require high pressures (CO2).
  • CSG,TERRE  and China agreed to meet again in a few months’ time in order to create, in due course, an agreement of collaboration on certification, training, education and sharing experiences.

The Mayor at the City’s Municipality also welcomed the delegation

2 Casale Monferrato is a refrigeration district of Italy and is hub of distinct competencies, for example in the production of bottle coolers using natural refrigerants. This city has technologies, which are much in demand by companies like Red Bull, Coca Cola and Unilever. 3. China is the largest manufacturer of HCFCs and the Air conditioning Units in the world. It has recently embarked on the implementation of HCFC phase out with a roadmap which takes into account the importance of energy efficiency, quality improvements of products, and the creation of smart green technologies, with special focus on adoption of new refrigerants with low environmental impacts. MEP is the focal point for the implementation of HCFC phase out. The visit of China delegation aimed at getting to know the developments in Europe and develop the collaboration for the implementation.

The roadmap aims at increasing energy efficiency by 20% by the year 2015, and by a further 15% by 2020. Additionally, refrigeration fluids, which are being considered, include hydrocarbons for home appliances, and further natural refrigerants for other applications. For example, a solution designed by a Chinese company, which uses CO2 as refrigerant to cool beverages and freeze food, reduces the system energy consumption by 30% every year, and the overall weight of the plant is reduced by 8% (source: China Household Electrical Appliances Association - CHEAA).

Solaria Energia & Medio Ambiente SA have won orders to build photovoltaic plants in Germany. They will build two photovoltaic plants. The value of the contract is 13 million euros.

A NextEra Energy Inc. has wind power projects in Oklahoma and California. The organization has raised $234 million for the projects. The projects have a combined capacity of 237 megawatts. One of the other units of the firm has raised funds from JPMorgan Chase & Co. for the wind power projects in California. 

Two solar power projects in Connecticut will supply power to Northeast Utilities and UIL Holdings Corporation: Department of Energy & Environmental Protection


Connecticut has selected two solar power projects. The projects will sell power to Northeast Utilities and UIL Holdings Corporation. They have got in a contract for selling power for 20 years at one of the lowest price in US. The average cost is estimated to be at 22.2 cents a kilowatt-hour. This was disclosed by the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection of the state. The power projects have a capacity of 5-megawatts.

Woolnorht Studland Bay Wind Farm Pty. and Bluff Point Wind Farm Pty. want to organize for new loans. They have hired National Australia  Bank for this purpose. The loan amount is A$180 million ($183 million). The amount will be used by the organizations to refinance two existing term facilities.
